man playing an instrument

Motorpitch and I just finished a bootleg of the wonderful tune "La Mezcla" by Michel Cleis, which you are going to hear on the show today. "La Mezcla" has been the big tune on Luciano's Cadenza records for the last few months, and it samples two Cumbia tunes from the Colombian singer Toto la Momoposina (you might recognize "Curara", which was used a few years back on Timbaland and Magoo's "Indian Flute").

It was getting late in the studio last night, and Motorpitch and I started to have one of our "we are tired so we decide to come up with theories about music" conversations. By the end of our discussion, I managed to convince him of the following.

Minimal techno producer from Switzerland + traditional Cumbia folk music sample + Roland TR 808 drumkit = Worldwide club hit!

Don't believe me? Look at Samim's "Heater" - the formula works! Sure, these are only two examples, but just you wait and see over the next years...

Okay, so my theory doesn't hold much weight... at all. But what is it about blending traditional folk music with dance music that can work so well? A recent article in The Gap magazine kind of addresses this issue, where the author basically argues that this is, or should be, a passing fad. I disagree with that because I think that dance music producers will always look towards the foreign and the exotic for inspiration, be it "world music" or classical music or whatever. It's not a trendy thing, it's about being interested in sounds, rhythms and melodies. I mean, why did Afrika Bambataa sample Kraftwerk's "Trans Europe Express" to create "Planet Rock"? I imagine that it's because he liked the sound of that record, which was so different to the American and Jamaican music that he was hearing at the time. I doubt that that he did it because he thought it to be trendy or cool.

Music is not about nationality or origins. It's a taste thing, you either like it or you don't. Looking towards music outside of your own culture or surroundings is natural for any music lover. On the show today, we're featuring a few tracks from the new Krazy Baldhead album from France, as well as new tunes from the Ward 21 album from Jamaica. Man, it feels so weird even writing that previous sentence, "from Jamaica, from France". On Unlimited we play music from all over the world not because of its origin, but for the simple reason that we love the tunes. The world is a huge library of music, it's good to have a look around.

Rock Steady in Vienna! - Zehn Jahre Treasure Isle Soundsystem

Beware's wise words:

Today's set from the Round Table Knights was recorded an hour before our gig at the Postgarage in Spring Festival. I think our buddy Evangelos was talking into the mic halfway in to the set, but I'm not sure hahaha!

The gig at Spring was madness, those of you who were there know what I'm talking about. What a night!

Someone by the name of Orangutanklaus sent in this video which captures some of the atmosphere. You can also read about it here.
