What do Chuck D, Thom Yorke and Frank Zappa have in common?

The standard way of framing the current copyright debate is to have poor teenagers, geeks and thieves on one side, and music labels, artists, and musicians on the other. Every time the music industry attempts to influence governments into enacting a new law it's always "Think of the artists!"

Believe me, a lot of the current critics of the system spend quite a bit of time thinking about the artists. As a matter of fact, most of the vocal critics I know are creative types themselves. And not just frustrated unsuccesful artists either. Quite a few have a major collection of hits under their belts.

And they think the system sucks too.

      we all know about them. For some reason industry supporters seem to get more press than critics.

    And you should never forget, what Courtney Love had to say about music-industry and why Lars Ulrich did a - from his perspective - good thing, when he took part in sueing Napster.

    Also, the Merlin-Network (the fifth, virtual major record company) which supports almost 15.000 indie-labels, has a cause - even though they also "just want money". But they have a point, when they point out, that all our indie-nerd-happiness (last.fm, youtube, myspace,...) bases on "ripping of" many indie-labels - well, at least from their point of view.
