Today's webtip: Layar

the worlds first augmented reality browser.

When I was a kid, the future was flying cars, life on mars and star trek communicators. The only one of those that has really found its way into my life so far has been the communicator, and I think I can live with that.

As a young adult the potential future changed. It became life in the machine, constant connections and those heads up display units that provided instant information on anything you were looking at.

Right now, thanks to those communicators, the constant connections have pretty much become a part of daily life. And as of yesterday, that all informative HUD could be too.

Layar is a program doing something that has been demoed on smart phones for a while. Hold up the phone, point it's camera at something and it will identify your surroundings and give you information on what you see. As of yesterday Layar brought those demos to life with their software for the G1. They are calling it the worlds first augmented reality browser, and although it might not be completely accurate, they are definately the first to go to market.

And soon those millions of iPhone phreaks will be able to get their hands on it. That combination of millions of potential users with some super fantastic new possibilities could be a serious game changer. My head is already bursting with potential business and game oprotunities for this type of thing, and I can only assume that the same could be said for much more capable individuals across the planet.

Next level indeed...

where's the difference when compared wikitude? not that this isn't nifty but is this really the first? or ist just calling yourself a "browser" so much of a difference now?

      Well

I think it'S because Wikitude (which was also mentioned here ;) only pulls text info from Qype and photos from Panoramia, whereas Layar (as I understand it) is actually a browser and can pull info from multiple sites, although it seems as though they are limiting it to a handfull of partner content providers.

That measn that with layar you should have acces to a greater variety of information (and itmeans they have a business model other than simple app sales)
