Today's Webtip: the iPhone worm

and how to avoid it. You really don't want to be Rick-Rolled.

The Podcast

The very first iPhone worm has been reported in the wild in Australia. iPhone users with jailbroken phones that have SSH installed and haven't changed the default password have had their phones wallpaper changed to an image of Rick Astley.

Although there have not yet been any reports of infections outside of Australia, this might be a good time for owners of hacked iPhones to change the default passwords if they are using SSH. Owners of non-jailbroken phones, or people who haven't installed SSH have nothing to fear.

Those who HAVE hacked their phones and installed SSH really really really need to make sure that they have changed the default root password. Not changing it makes you very vulnerable, not only to worms, but to anyone that knows what to look for.

So, if you think you might be affected please follow a quick how-to on changing the root password. It's quick and easy and quite worth your time.

Though, to be fair, people who are able to jailbreak their phone are usually smart enough to change the custom passwords.
    Still, nice one.

      Nope

I know a lot of people who managed to jailbreak their phones but that was as far as it went. Many of the tools have been really simple pushbutton afairs, and anyone who has checked out the comments in the guides will have realized that many people who were hacking their phones were in well over their heads.

There are also quite a few who have had them fixed by someone else.

Although there are a few warnings about changing the password, SSH is frequently installed by default, whereas the terminal app isn't, which means that people would have needed to heed the warnings, AND installed some extra software. If you have ever done any kind of support for non-geeks, you will know what that combination leads to.

There are a lot of wide open phones out there.
