Today's Webtip: WJMCR

an academic approach to the web and mass communications.

While the ancient (and mildly juvenile) debate on the value of online journalism continues in print and online, it might be worth it to take a look at a more serious approach to the issues at hand.

The Web Journal of Mass Communication Research has been publishing articles since 1997.

There are currently 17 issues of the journal available online, covering a wide variety of topics, but some of the more pertinent to the whole "quality journalism" brouhaha would be:

"Are Blogs Changing the News Values of Newspaper Reporters?" by Mary Lou Sheffer and Brad Schultz. WJMCR 16

"Examining the Features, Policies, and Resources of Citizen Journalism: Citizen News Sites and Blogs," by Stephen R. Lacy, Daniel Riffe, Esther Thorson, and Margaret Duffy. WJMCR 15

"Blogs in the Media Conversation: A Content Analysis of the Knowledge Stage in the Diffusion of an Innovation," by Nanette Hogg, Carol S. Lomicky, and Syed A. Hossain. WJMCR 12

and

"Newspapers and Their Online Editions: Factors that Influence Successful Integration," by Bonnie Bressers and Robert Meeds. WJMCR 10

They don't provide quite the same level of entertainment as watching a bunch of media personalities calling each other names, but that might not be such a very bad thing...
