Today's Webtip: Science Fiction für Anfänger
Shopping for science fiction drives me nuts. I know I could find anything I want online, but a part of me really wants to support the old fashioned book store. So every couple of months I wander back into a brick building to see what I can find.
And I almost always want to scream. Finding row upon row of books about elves and dragons and vampires in the science fiction section is not cool. And when the fantasy titles outnumber the science fiction titles in the SF sections it's just downright stupid.
After trying desperately to find some appropriate beginners SF for my boy, I started to understand why things are like that. There isn't much SF available for young readers, so most kids end up with silly teen dramas or books about mystical critters.
It's a darn shame.
Add to that the fact that there are some literary gems hidden in the SF ranks, but there are also loads of paper-wasters, and you have a genre that might be a bit difficult to get into.
Fortunately for us, the good people at io9.com are on the job. Analee Newitz has put together a nice little book list with some SF reading suggestions that provide a good overview of some of the major themes and authors of science fiction.
And if there are any book-buyers for stores big or small out there, please take a hint. Ok?
