Today's Webtip: Maurice Sendak

a few things you might not have known about the man behind the monsters.

I will assume you have heard of the book "Where the Wild Things Are". You might have read it as a child, or simply been unable to avoid the media hype when the film came out.

You might even have read some of the other books written by the author, Maurice Sendak.

But you probably don't know much about him.

I only knew enough to be sad when I heard that he had died. That mild sorrow inched toward despair as I began to find links to articles and other things providing a look at the perfect grumpy old man he was.

First off, Maurice vs. Colbert:

Add to that an article at Mentalfloss and round it all off with a comic illustrating the time Art Spiegelmann went to Connecticut for a talk with Mr. Sendak. The result might surprise you...

    found that yesterday:
“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I ...wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”
