Gästezimmer mit den White Lies

Die britische Band White Lies machte zuletzt auf ihrer Europatour auch Halt in Wien. Gelegenheit für uns, die Band in das FM4-Gästezimmer zu bitten.

Die White Lies aus London waren vor kurzem in Wien und spielten ein ausverkauftes Konzert in der Ottakringer Brauerei und exklusiv für uns eine FM4 Acoustic Session. Vor zehn Jahren wurden Harry McVeigh, Jack Lawrence-Brown und Charles Cave international bekannt - mit ihrem Debutalbum „To Lose My Life“. Dunkel-romantische Songs, inspiriert von Postpunk und Bands wie Joy Division und New Order. Heuer haben die White Lies ihr bereits fünftes Album namens „Five“ veröffentlicht und sind damit auf Tour - und das, wie gesagt, sehr erfolgreich. Die Fans sind ihnen treu geblieben seit ihrem allerersten Album und es sind auch neue hinzugekommen, denn die Musik der Band hat sich ja auch weiterentwickelt.

Für das FM4 Gästezimmer am 31.3. 2019 haben Harry McVeigh und Charles Cave von den White Lies eine Auswahl an Lieblingssongs zusammengestellt. Schlagzeuger Jack Lawrence-Brown war nicht greifbar, weil er gerade unterwegs war - zum Wäschewaschen. Aber Harry und Charles wählten Lieblingssongs aus, vom großen US-Musiker Paul Simon über die Songwriterin Martha Wainwright bis zu den Britpop-Vorläufern The Kinks. Hört einfach selbst, welche Musik Harry und Charles lieben, egal ob alt oder neu.

Steely Dan - „Gaucho“

Charles Cave: „Gaucho“ by Steely Dan is a piece of music Harry and I have become quite obsessed with over the last couple of years. It feels like a song where actually the inspiration you can draw from it would fill many many albums, let alone individual songs. It’s just a work of genius and kind of something I don’t even want to pick apart and look at the theory too much because it’s just magic to me every time I hear it.

The Kinks - „Strangers“

Harry McVeigh: „Strangers“ by The Kinks is from their album „Lola Versus Powerman...“, which is sort of a bonkers record, but I think The Kinks produced some of the best songs of that era. Although they are a massive band I think they are quite underrated and I think they deserve a full revival.

Martha Wainwright - „Bloody Motherfucking Asshole“

Charles Cave: Martha Wainwright is a singer-songwriter who I remember hearing fifteen years ago, especially this song. Obviously the Wainwright family have produced quite a few songwriters for a one given family. Martha Wainwright has a song called „Bloody Motherfucking Asshole“ and I think it’s one of the most incredible performances - vocal performances let alone the songwriting itself. I find it quite emotionally actually; I have to listen to it in a safe space just in case it sends me over the edge.

Weyes Blood - „Everyday“

Harry McVey: „Everyday“ is a new song by Weyes Blood. I´ve been listening to Weyes Blood for a while. I think she´s a phantastic songwriter.

Paul Simon - „Hearts And Bones“

Charles Cave: Paul Simon for me was the artist that pretty much started my interest and love of music. We had a compilation in my parents’ car and that’s pretty much what I listened to. I didn’t really have the Beatles or Bob Dylan or any of those things that a lot of people have, it was Paul Simon, so I owe a lot to him. „Hearts And Bones“ is one of his greatest compositions and it is one of my favourite things to play on guitar as well.

Melanie - „Ruby Tuesday“

Harry McVeigh: I haven’t seen my wife in six weeks and „Ruby Tuesday“ by Melanie always reminds me of her - it´s one of her favourite songs. It’s a beautiful song and one of the best vocal performances ever.
