FM4 Acoustic Session mit Joan As Police Woman

Die New Yorker Musikerin hat das FM4 Studio beehrt, herzerwärmende Songs performt und über ihren Zugang zu Cover Versionen gesprochen.

Wie kann man eine Musikerin glücklich machen? Sie in ein Studio mit Bösendörfer Piano einladen. Das haben wir schon 2011 gemacht als Joan As Police Woman mit ihrem Album „The Deep Field“ auf Tour war. In der Zwischenzeit sind acht Jahre vergangen und Joan Wasser hat vier weitere Alben veröffentlicht: „Damned Devotion“, „The Classic“ und „Let It Be You“ an dem sie mit ihrem Musikerkollegen Benjamin Lazar Davis gearbeitet hat und das unter anderem von ihrer Africa Express Reise nach Äthiopien inspiriert war. Ihr aktuelles Album mit dem sie im November auf Europa Tour war trägt den schönen Titel “Joanthology” und ist eine Art Best-Of-Album mit Songs quer durch ihre Schaffenskarriere.

Joan As Police Woman sagt “through singing I learned a lot about honesty and how to be honest“ In ihren Songs geht es um Alles: Herz und Nieren. Haut und Haare. Es geht um das Leben und Überleben. Es geht oft um Einsamkeit: „I have a song called “to be lonely” that´s about being lonely with someone else which I feel like we´re all basically alone all the time but can choose to be lonely with others!” Und es geht auch um das Gefühl der Überwältigung: wenn es einen innerlich zwischen Schmerz und Freude zerreisst. Davon handelt zum Beispiel der Song „What A World“. Einen nicht unähnlichen Gänsehaut-Charakter hat auch der Song „Wonderful“ den Joan As Police Woman als Opening Song auf ihrem Album „Damned Devotion“ veröffentlicht hat. Verdammte Hingabe. Sie wird mit jedem Atemzug und Tasteneinschlag bei ihrer Acoustic-Performance spürbar.

Joan As Police Woman ist neben ihren eigenen Songs auch für ihre besonderen Coverversionen bekannt. Vor zehn Jahren hat sie sich für ihr Album „Cover“ an grosse Ikonen wie Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix oder Sonic Youth gewagt, sie arbeitet an einem neuen Cover-Album vielleicht schon nächstes Jahr erscheinen wird.

„I dont necessarily expect to make songs better I just want to shine some kind of new light on them. I covered Prince´s „Kiss“ and I could not make that song better because it´s a perfect song. So when I started trying to find my way into it I resolved myself into “I may not be able to do it” I´m gonna try but I would feel comfortable also if I thought “yeah I can´t find a new light” I really really wanted to sing those lyrics so I worked hard on finding my way in. Some people have called it unrecognizable which i´m totally fine with. I´ve reharmonized it and added new words. It is a different version that´s for sure. I do that. I have no interest in doing any wedding band covers of any songs. So any song that´s on there is going to be reworked. Seriously reworked.“

Im Akustik Studio hat sie ihren eigenen Song „Christobel“ mit Blur´s Track „Out Of Time“ vereint: “I was working on writing a new arrangement for “Christobel” because I wrote that song on a guitar and I was playing guitar in this sort of like strummy way that I don’t ever do anymore nor am I interested in doing. So I decided I would figure out a way to put it on the piano and that would be how I would perform it but in the midst of that I was really … I am a huge fan of Damon Albarn´s and I love some of those Blur songs and I wanted to figure out a way to cover one of those songs in a way that made sense and I started playing the bassline from “Christobel”. A rough version of the bassline and then I just found myself playing “Out Of Time” out of that and so I made it into one piece. Do you think it works?”
