FM4 Acoustic Session mit Owen Pallett

Die Geige hat Owen Pallett zu Hause gelassen und setzt sich im FM4 Studio ans Klavier und die Gitarre.

Mit drei, erzählt er, habe er Geige spielen gelernt. Es ist also ein ungewöhnliches Bild, dass Owen Pallett beim Studiobesuch kein Instrument unters Kinn klemmt und mit seinen Füssen das Looping Pedal bedient, sondern seine Hände am Klavier ausbreitet und zur Gitarre greift. Grund dafür sind seine neuen Songs und die neue Liveshow „I played with a band and I had a synthesizer and a violin but I shifted it to be more guitar oriented so it would reflect this record. I still play violin and it’s looped but I’ve also kind of incorporated a great deal more sound design in this new liveshow. It’s very mood. I’m really, really happy with it!”

Owen Pallett war seit langer Zeit ein Wunschkandidat für das jährlich im Herbst stattfindende Blue Bird Festival. Bei der diesjährigen Ausgabe hat es endlich geklappt. Owen Pallett hat in den 00er Jahren unter seinem Künstlernamen Final Fantasy Musik veröffentlicht. Anfang 2010 hat er dann begonnen, Alben unter seinem echten Namen zu veröffentlichen. Er ist als Komponist und Arrangeur auch Teil von Arcade Fire, hat an „The Suburbs“ wie auch an „The Funeral“ mitgearbeitet und war mit dem gemeinsam geschriebenem Soundtrack zum Film „Her“ auch für einen Oscar nominiert.

Das Musikertraumpaar Win&Regine hat er in seinem wohl bekanntesten Stück „This is the dream of Win&Regine“ verewigt. Auch mit Ambient-Gott Brian Eno hat Owen Pallett schon zusammengearbeitet - bei seinem letzten Album „In Conflicht“. Damals, 2014, war er auch das letzte Mal in Österreich zu Gast. Neben seiner Arbeit als Komponist für Film, Arrangeur und Produzent hat er in den letzten Jahren auch sein neues Album fertiggestellt das nächstes Jahr erscheinen soll.

„Following the release of „Heartland“ I was working on this new record which is called „Island“ as well as doing film work and arrangement work but a couple years I started to experience some mental health difficulties and I was not able to tour or put out the record. I continued to work at home on arrangement work and stuff to pay my rent but I held off on putting out the record until fairly recently.”

Musik als ständiger Begleiter und vielleicht auch Endorphin-Booster? Wie wichtig oder unterstützend war für Owen Pallett Musik, selbst in seiner schwierigen Phase? „It hasn’t. Music is my job. What has helped me is being around friends and cooking and being around family!”

Songs sind Produkte und Fans sind Kunden. Owen Pallett findet diesen Zugang gesund: „I try and deliver the best quality product to people. People make fun of me when I use words like client and product but I think it’s a very healthy and respectful way of thinking about it. I want to create something that people wish to spend time on. That’s my primary focus.”

Nachgefragt wieviel Politik in seinen neuen Songs steckt, meint Owen Pallett: „I do have political ideas that I am active about but I don’t really think that my work as a musician there’s not a lot of crosspollinization between it. That’s not to say my music is apolitical at all. To me the politics of my music are more related to personal issues and interpersonal issues.”

Das neue Album „Island“ schließt vom Konzept her dort an wo Owen Pallett 2010 mit seinem Album Heartland aufgehört hat: „My record ‚Heartland‘ was about a farmer named Lewis and over the course of the record he is a devout worshipper of a God named Owen who is the creator of his world and at the end of the record he has a battle with Owen and murders him and kicks him off a cliff and urinates on his corpse. This record ‚Island‘ is a sequel to that. Lewis is floating out across the ocean and ends up in a port town on this island and he sort of enters into a cycle of hedonism and it’s about his time there on the island!”
