Das neue Lied der Foo Fighters

“Waiting On A War” ist laut Taylor Hawkins das beste Lied der Foo Fighters.

Von Susi Ondrušová

Im Februar erscheint das neue 10. Album der Foo Fighters: „Medicine at Midnight” wird einige Überraschungen für Fans liefern (Stichwort: Disco). Fragt man allerdings Drummer Taylor Hawkins welcher Song am neuen Album für ihn der Beste ist, dann sagt er: „Waiting On A War“!

“Dave wrote it before the pandemic. You know growing up in the Cold War in the 80’s and then into the 90’s with all the Middle East stuff and early in the 2000’s North Korea and all of that stuff, there’s this sort of behind, in the back of your mind the fear that we could go to war at any time! I mean everyone, EVERYONE can fucking really relate to that. And it’s just in Dave’s lyric. It’s just so good. I think it’s one of the best songs he’s ever written. You know, it’s like at ‚Times Like These‘, ‚These Days‘, ‚Best of you‘ it’s got that heart on his sleeve sort of naive in a way look at it. Almost from a child’s perspective. And the first line is ’I’ve been waiting on a war since I was young. Since I was a little boy with a toy gun’ and I just thought when he was singing that, I was like, oh my God, that is so simple and so deep at the same time. And such a really profound and simple way of kind of looking at the world through a child’s eyes. So as much as I like the disco and the grooves and all that stuff, ‚Waiting on a war‘ is one of the Top 10 Best Songs! I’m just going to say it. I can say that because I didn’t write it, you know, I just played drums on the damn thing. But it really is one of those ‚Wow!‘ Did you really somehow tap into something, you know, like Bono, Bruce Springsteen, that Dylan, Lennon level?”

„Quiet-louder-louder-explode!“

We’ve always been a band that’s enjoyed dynamics and obviously with ‚grunge‘ it’s ‚quiet-loud-quiet-loud-quiet-loud‘. But Dave really likes ‚quiet-louder-louder-explode‘. And I love it and I’m really proud to be part of that song, just a small part of it, just the drums. We literally recorded and wrote that song in one day. You know when it’s just so right that every foot, every step you take is the right step. Well, that was that day in the studio and that was ‚Waiting On A War‘. As soon as I heard him sing that first lyric, I thought, oh, my God Dude! Wow! It was like one of those really proud days to be in the Foo Fighters!”
