Wolf Alice: This band could be your life!

Nach ihrem sensationellen Album „Visions Of Life“ für den die Londoner Band 2018 mit dem Mercury Prize ausgezeichnet wurde, melden sich Wolf Alice mit einem neuen Song zurück. „The Last Man On Earth“ gibt einen Vorgeschmack auf ihr drittes Album „Blue Weekend“.

Sie haben irgendwie Glück gehabt. Nach einem herausfordernden Konzertjahr 2018 haben sich Wolf Alice für 2019 bis auf ein paar Festival Termine eine Auszeit gegönnt, erst Anfang letzten Jahres haben sich die vier Bandmitglieder wieder zum Schreiben getroffen, um an ihrem Nachfolgewerk zu arbeiten.

Punk, Pop und Poetry

„Visions Of Life“ hat alles, was diese Band so unwiderstehlich macht: Es ist zu gleichen Teilen Punk, Pop und Poetry. Wenn Adam Levine einen Funken Ahnung (oder Internet) hätte, hätte er sicher nicht gesagt, dass Bands vom „Aussterben bedroht“ sind.

Wolf Alice haben sich in einem Häuschen in Somerset eingemietet, um sich langsam wieder einem Band-Alltag zu nähern und neues Material auszuprobieren. Gitarristin und Sängerin Ellie Rowsell erzählt im FM4-Interview:

„We were maybe just a little bit shy to have said that we’d written stuff because there was quite a lot of pressure, I think, amongst the four of us to trump what we’d already done. But I think once we were in a room with each other and had reconnected just as friends almost, we were less shy to show each other what we’d worked on. And we actually had quite a lot of stuff. So we booked a rehearsal room in London and just played them and worked on them until we were ready to go to a recording studio, which was at the start of 2020, unbeknownst to us what was about to occur. But luckily we had everything in place so that we were able to continue. And work on these songs throughout lockdown and throughout the craziness.”

Emotionales Album

Das Gefühl, dass man sich nach einem erfolgreichen Album-Zyklus neu erfindet und voller Tatendrang und Plänen einen neuen Weg einschlägt, ist Ellie Rowsell nicht fremd, aber in die Realität lässt sich das nicht so leicht umsetzen:

„I think the best way we work is to just not second guess what we should do. We just wait for it almost to happen to us. You can’t steer yourself in any one direction. You just have to kind of go with the flow for us anyways. And that’s what we did again and I do think it produces our best work, even though it’s quite frustrating because you’re kind of at the back and call of the songs themselves rather than choosing exactly what you want to do!”

Der erste Vorbote zum neuen Album „Blue Weekend“, das im Juni erscheinen wird, ist eine sich langsam aufbauschende Piano-Ballade mit exzellenter Gesangs-Chor-Einlage. Die laut-leise-Dynamik beherrschen Wolf Alice perfekt. (Höre auch „Blush“)

Ellie Rowsell meint, ein zweiter, „Last Man On Earth“ ähnlicher, Song findet sich nicht am neuen Album. Alles was sie zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt verraten möchte, ist dass das Album „emotionaler“ ist als der Vorgänger: „There’s some heavy stuff on it, but there is quite a lot of soft stuff as well, which some people will be interested to hear. I really think that you will have to consume this album as a whole.”
