„Goliath“ - ein Lebenszeichen von Woodkid

Und was für eines! „Goliath“ - die dramatische und lebensbejahende neue Single von Woodkid.

Vor sieben Jahren, also vor einer Ewigkeit, hat der französische Musiker Yoann Lemoine aka Woodkid mit „The Golden Age“ sein Debütalbum veröffentlicht. Einen Namen hat er sich davor schon als Musikvideo-Filmemacher gemacht. Er hat die visuellen Konzepte für Songs von Katy Perry („Teenage Dream“) oder Lana Del Rey („Born To Die“) umgesetzt. In den letzten Jahren hat er außerdem mit Nils Frahm oder Moses Sumney und Mykki Blanco zusammengearbeitet. Mit „Goliath“ erscheint jetzt die neue Woodkid-Single und ist auch ein Vorbote zu seinem neuen Album, das heuer noch veröffentlicht werden soll.

Es geht ihm gut in seiner Pariser Wohnung in der Selbstisolation und er freut sich über seinen neuen Song sprechen zu können, erzählt Yoann Lemoine beim FM4 Interview. Am ersten Juli hätte Woodkid ein Open-Air-Konzert in der Arena Wien spielen sollen. Jemand wie er, der gerne plant und alles „unter Kontrolle“ hat, den bringt Corona zum Umdenken. In den letzten Wochen hat er gelernt, los zu lassen. „You can still make things without knowing what comes tomorrow. I think there´s a certain beauty in this”, sagt er im Interview. Nicht ohne zu erwähnen, dass er sich Sorgen macht um die finanziellen Nöte seiner Mitmenschen und die wirtschaftlichen Folgen für die Musik-/Live-Industrie.

Große Bühnen-Sehnsucht

Einen kreativen Plan B für einen konzertfreien Sommer oder gar Herbst und Winter hat er auch nicht. Er erinnert sich, dass er während der Arbeit an seinen neuen Songs in den letzten Monaten eine große Bühnen-Sehnsucht verspürt hat. „I think it is almost more important than making a studio record. The ultimate idea of making music is to sing it to people. So I don’t want to be so pessimistic that I give up on this in my head. I will always believe that this will happen and this will happen even in a more intense form. What I can hope for is, that at some point we go back to when people don’t use their phones anymore. If there is a lesson to learn from this, it’s to value how precious it is to go to a live concert. Playing your music on Instagram live is fine, but it has nothing to do with performing live in front of people. Because it’s the only thing that can’t be dematerialized. One thing that I really wish for is that this crisis is not the time of the ultimate dematerialization of everything, even of human interconnections.”

“Goliath” heißt sein neuer Song, weil es um den Kampf mit seinen inneren Dämonen geht. Nach dem Erfolg seines ersten Albums stand er vor vielen Herausforderungen: “I have dealt with a lot of insecurities in the past years after the release of my first record and I have felt that I’ve had incredible challenges to defeat. One of them was to make a new record and fight against the fear of being forgotten but also just in general the speed of the world, the toxicity of the world. Some things that oppresses every single person right now. And it asks quite some heroic capabilities from people to deal with that. It couldn’t be more true in this situation right now.”

Kampf mit den ganz großen Herausforderungen

Der Weg aus dieser gefühlten Machtlosigkeit und Ohnmacht war für Woodkid ein Kampf David vs. Goliath. „It is about the little scales of humans vs. the massive challenges. The lyrics of the song are about getting lost in front of this kind of system that seems to swallow you. That was the idea. The only thing I really know how to talk about is my intimate feelings. I never want to be a lesson to the world. I am uncertain about so many things so the only thing that matters to me in my music is to hope that my insecurities or my strengths or my feelings will somehow resonate with people. I thought there was a way to talk about this and how this album helped me heal and defeat that beast. How making things and how creating was a healing process to me. And I was hoping that people will connect to this.”

Musikalisch hat der Song für ihn begonnen mit einem Soundteppich, der sich für ihn angehört hat wie eine Panik Attacke. „How can you defeat that how can you ease yourself through this? So it was a lot about playing with the tenderness of the vocals and this kind of non stop fury of the beat that would always fight against the voice. It was such a struggle and a fight to put them together that it made a very complex song on the surface but under it is just a simple almost like a ballad that I can sing on the piano!”
