CMAT spielt eine FM4 Session und stellt uns ihre Lieblingslieder vor

In ihrer Heimat Irland wird CMAT als „Dublin’s Antwort auf Dolly Parton“ bezeichnet, ihr Debütalbum „If My Wife New I´d Be Dead“ landete 2022 nicht nur an der Spitze der Albumcharts, sondern ist auch mit dem Choice Music Prize als Album des Jahres ausgezeichnet worden. Sie war auf der Sounds of 2024 Longlist der BBC gefeatured und bezeichnet ihre Musik als „nischig“ denn: CMAT macht Country Musik. Mit einer glamourös angehauchten Punk-Attitude.

Eine CMAT Konzert Experience zum Nachmachen für Zuhause schaut so aus: „Get some sequins on, get some fringe, something that moves. You want to put that on your body! Then go and find some gay men and have them kind of around you dancing and maybe doing some choreography. Work up enough of a sweat that you’re kind of a little bit moist and let your mascara run down your face a little bit and let yourself look kind of terrible. And then just sing some country music. I think that’s a good way of recreating it!”

Letzten Jahr hat CMAT ihr zweites Album „Crazymad, for Me“ veröffentlicht. Ein Konzeptalbum auf dem sie die „Wouldve/Couldve/Shouldve“ Beziehungsfragen auslotet: CMAT reist in die Vergangenheit um sich selbst aus einer Beziehung zu befreien, die ihr Leben ruiniert. Es geht um Liebe, Reue, Betrug und „emotionale Miete“.

Ihre markante Stimme und ihr Stil ist von Country Musik inspiriert. Als Einfluss nennt sie zum Beispiel Patsy Cline aber auch Kate Bush und nicht zuletzt Charli XCX. Einem Treffen mit ihrem Idol ist es zu verdanken, dass sie ihr Leben auf den Kopf gestellt hat und nach einer Reihe von Enttäuschungen angefangen hat, Songs unter ihrem Namen CMAT zu veröffentlichen. Es war der Song „I Wanna Be A Cowboy Baby” mit dem sie 2020 auf sich aufmerksam gemacht hat.

Country? Irland? So abwegig ist das nicht wie sie im FM4 Interview meint: „The thing about country music that everybody seems to forget – often willingly - is that it is a melting pot genre! A lot of the old songs a lot of the original songs are English and Irish murder ballads and so the lyricism is something that would’ve travelled from Ireland and England. Country music really should be representative of a combination of every influence you can possibly find, and it should be representative of community, and it should be reflective of the world – as we see it! Something unfortunate that´s happened is that it´s been very coopted by conservatism and rightwing identity politics in America. They use the modern commercialized country as the way of standing in their own white identity as proud white americans but it makes no sense, it’s a completely stupid genre to use for that reason because the beauty of it is that it is about everyone!”
